About the Workshop

Skill level: Mid-level beginner through advanced

Materials used: Tobi will be working pastel only. Other mediums are ok, but instruction will be in pastel only. Students will need a good selection of pastels and some experience working with them. A supply list will be sent out upon registration starting in February.

Workshop description: Tobi Clement, an award-winning and internationally recognized pastel artist is known for her ability to capture the luminous quality of skies in the Southwest. She is a Signature Member of Plein Air Painters of New Mexico, Pastel Society of New Mexico, and Northwest Pastel Society.

Her action-packed workshops are fun and her joy-filled energy is contagious!

In this three-day pastel workshop, she will break down her approach to painting skies and clouds. The class outline includes concise, step-by-step visual demonstrations followed by exercises that provide students with a roadmap to find their way through the clouds. Students learn how to dress up a simple sky, and mass, simplify cloud forms and explore methods for creating stormy clouds. She will focus on important layering techniques for creating luminous sunsets while utilizing color value to build a dynamic color story.

BONUS ACTIVITY:

On the second day, we will be headed to a special tour one evening for a gallery hop on Canyon Road and visit Tobi’s gallery, Canyon Road Contemporary Art! Tobi will be able to show us her current work and then we will head out for a special group dinner up on Canyon Road! The perfect summer evening in Santa Fe!

Tobi believes that one learns best by first observing and then working independently. The mornings are spent watching quick demonstrations and working on exercises. In the afternoon students will work toward the completion of a painting utilizing the concepts introduced earlier in the day.

About Tobi

As a child, Tobi looked forward to spending time with her grandmother in North Carolina. They enjoyed time together working on a variety of craft projects. Tobi says “my grandmother’s love of making beautiful things was passed down to me.” Her interest in sewing and design led her to pursue a career in fashion. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City and spent the next seven years building a career as a fashion designer.

In 1989 Tobi traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico seeking quiet time from the frenzied pace of the New York fashion industry. Waking early, she stepped outside, breathed in the clean high mountain air, and watched the sunrise over this magical town. The light was unlike anything she had experienced living on the East Coast. Mesmerized by the adobe architecture, expansive skies, and dramatic landscapes, Tobi knew at that moment that she was going to be calling New Mexico home. She moved to Santa Fe the following year and recreated herself as a hairstylist and opened her own salon. During her last ten years as a stylist, Tobi began to pursue the medium of pastels and developed herself as an artist. Recently retired from a long and successful 25-year career as a hairstylist, she now enjoys exploring life as a full-time artist, painting, and teaching.

“Mistress and Muse”

"The creative pulse that has been beating within me since I was born, has now fully emerged and become expressed through my artistry. A lifetime of seemingly unrelated experiences, careers, and creative passions have filled my book of life with many chapters. With a good bourbon in hand, I reflect upon how the mysteries of life unfold when connected to the divine flow. Each experience seemingly unconnected at the time often becomes the introduction to the next chapter" says Tobi.
