About the Workshop

Skill level: All levels are welcome. What the beginner needs to learn the experienced artist needs to perfect.

Materials used: Pastel, but open to oil painters. All demonstrations and illustrations will be done in pastel. Everything that can be done with pastel can also be done with oil.

Overview:

In the 3 days of the workshop, we will cover a lot of material.

The first day begins with a painting demonstration. For the remainder of the day, students will work on their own paintings. The second and third day each begins with short illustrations of painting principles. This typically takes about 45 minutes. The remainder of the second and third days students work on their own paintings and I go from student to student providing individual help.

Topics covered in the workshop include black and white and color thumbnail sketches.

Three types of designs characterize compelling paintings.

The principles that are used to create the illusion of depth in a landscape.

The principle of the common color.

The underlying concept of color harmony.

How to solve color problems as you paint.

Different approaches to under-painting

At the end of each day, there is a critique of the work done that day.

Students are invited to bring in additional work for the critique if they wish.
